Crime Stoppers, Stops Criminals
The program, which began in 1979 with $500, has become one of Southern Nevada's most successful
anti-crime fighters. With more than 96,000 anonymous phone calls, Crime Stoppers has helped to
apprehend more than 10,000 suspects in criminal cases that range from warrants and stolen vehicles
to more serious crimes such as narcotics, sex crimes and murder. When criminals are taken off the
street, they cannot commit another crime. Crime Stoppers stops criminals.
This organization, which has affiliates throughout
the United States and international chapters, is another tool available
to all Southern Nevada law enforcement to solve felony cases. Oftentimes,
one phone call can make all the difference.
How It Works It's Anonymous
Crime Stoppers is simple. People who have information
about a crime can provide tips, anonymously, to
law enforcement without the fear of reprisals. Individuals
call a 24-hour tip line to provide information about
a crime or a suspect. The tip line is available
seven days per week, 24 hours every day. No identification.
No caller ID. No Names. No court testimony. Anonymity
is the most important component of Crime Stoppers.
The tip line is 385-5555 and Spanish-speaking operators
are available.
It Pays
Crime Stoppers offers reward money that is available to anyone who provides information that leads
to an arrest, and arraignment or indictment. Still, tipsters are anonymous. If a reward is
requested, a caller is provided a code number and rewards are paid through that assigned code
number. No names. No identification. Crime Stoppers rewards up to $2,000 depending upon the
nature of the felony crime. In 2003, the average reward was $400.
Community Support
Crime Stoppers' success depends on three elements: the support of law enforcement, support from the
media and a financial commitment from the community to ensure reward money is available.
Success
Crime Stoppers has helped solve many high-profile crimes in Southern Nevada through anonymous tips.
International Anti-Crime Program
Southern Nevada's Crime Stoppers program celebrates
its 25th anniversary in 2004. Since its 1979 inception, the program has
paid out $1.4 million in reward money, it has helped to recover $60
million in stolen property. More than 402,600
arrests have been made and 913,000 cases have been cleared as the result
of tips provided to Crime Stoppers. The program, first began in New Mexico,
now has 1,148 programs in the United States,
the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, South Africa,
British West Indies, The Bahamas and even Micronesia.
